Ferrari’s 60th Anniversary Highlighted by Challenge Season Opener

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

The Ferrari Festival, which coincides with the automaker’s 60th anniversary, is set to scorch the tracks and intensify the racing passing. The North American Ferrari Challenge Series 2007 season opener, which will be held at Miami’s Homestead Speedway, will commence on the 9th and will end on the 11th of this month.

The Ferrari Challenge season opener will showcase some of the Italian automaker’s greatest achievements as it happens together with the brand’s U.S. kick-off of a global relay anniversary. The event will feature a special ceremonial lap with up to 60 chosen Ferrari vehicles driven by owners, along with demonstrations of the 800+ horsepower, limited edition, FXX supercar and various Formula One vehicles. The event will be open for the public to enjoy thrilling race and racing-related adventure.

“As we celebrate Ferrari’s 60th anniversary, we reflect on not just our racing traditions, but those experiences that allow our owners and all Ferrari enthusiasts to share in the very same passion and excitement that our racing teams enjoy on a worldwide basis,” said Maurizio Parlato, the President and CEO of Ferrari North America, Inc. “Tying into the tradition of our Challenge series from both a participant and spectator role allows all Ferrari fans to be inspired by the performance and passion that can only be Ferrari.”

The Ferrari Challenge Series, on its 14th racing season in America, offers Ferrari owners who are not professional racers the chance to compete with each other in a highly competitive race at world-class venues throughout Canada and the United States. The said racing challenge is deemed the longest-running series of its type in North America.

Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the Italian sports car manufacturer, reflected true passion in auto racing. This passion is shared through various racing events sponsored by the automaker. The Ferrari Challenge is one of the numerous “exclusive” experiences that Ferrari offers its customers. Aside from the racing thrill, Ferrari owners could also enjoy dining in the lavish VIP hospitality tents, participating in weekend driving clinics, and socializing with those that share Ferrari gusto. The weekend festivals, in particular, deliver unique ambience and experience that are beyond compare. The general public, in general, could peruse the paddock areas, enjoy racing events, and be thrilled by the entirety of the festival. The Ferrari Challenge could keep the general public preoccupied that they could not even entertain the thoughts about Ford racing cold air intake or any other race parts and brands.

The Challenge Series is one of the many privileges Ferrari provides exclusively for its customers. Other Ferrari assets and experiences include the annual Ferrari Rally and Ferrari’s North American Driving School in Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Moreover, the company prolongs its commitment to offer extraordinary experiences where aficionados can enjoy their cars. The Challenge Series is organized by Ferrari North America, Inc., and sanctioned by the Grand American Road Racing Association.

Jeep Cherokee Sport like car that works well in snow?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

What is a car like the Jeep Cherokee Sport that works well in all sorts of weather, is reliable, and is fairly inexpensive. Or is the Jeep Cherokee Sport good for the things I mentioned?

I hear the Subaru’s are good in the snow. Light though and not as easy to modify as the Jeep Cherokee.

My personal preference would be the Cherokee (not to be confused with the Grand Cherokee) or the Wrangler. Like the other guy said 19 miles per gallon. So you may not be able to go as far on a $1 of gas, but you’ll be able to go ANYWHERE you want on $1 of gas. ;o)

Check out http://www.xjtalk.com/ http://www.tjtalk.com/ http://www.jktalk.com/. Lots of people there that can help you decide if you want a Jeep or not. Just be warned, they love their Jeeps. :o D

How do you become a test driver for porsche?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

and if so, is Bungle really one? and whats the best porsche? is the cayman really better than the 911?

The test drivers employed by the Porsche factory are either current or former race drivers. So, the quickest route to being a pro as a test driver would be to become a successful racecar driver (ideally in a GT series, and ideally in a Porsche since that will improve your visibility to the factory).

As I have no idea who Bungle is, I cannot comment. Porsche’s best known test driver is probably former WRC Champ Walter Rohl. The current stable of race drivers under contract to the factory (Sasha Massen, Patrick Long, etc) have also carried out testing.

As for the Cayman/911 debate… depends on what you mean by "better." The Cayman does have a better balanced and more rigid chasis. It probably ranks among the best chasis out there at the moment. Further, the chasis could clearly handly more power if the factory decided to give it to the car (likely some small upgraded to come, but ultimately it will still have less power than the Carrera as that is the order of things in terms of marketing). Comparing the overall package? The Cayman S matches up very well agains the base Carrera, being better in many performance measures under the right conditions, though falling short in luxury appointments and space. As a competition platform, it would likely be promising, but it lacks the time and development that has already gone into the GT3 meaning that it would likely be quite sometime before the Cayman could be developed to be an equal performer.

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I can’t wait to get my hand on one granted enough are available. I will start heckling our Ferrari dealer with an extra added bonus for his own pocket. I have got to have me one.

Actually how many of you still drive yourselves around. My chauffeur does all my driving for me these days. Actually can any of you recommend a good one to me? I’m going to have to let Giles go! I found a hint of car wax around the chrome grill and I must tell you I won’t stand for it!

Volvo Still Rules Estate Car Segment With New V70

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Large estate cars, known for their luxury and the versatility to accommodate a growing family, have been the best selling cars of Volvo. Their previous models like the Volvo Duett, Volvo 245 and the Volvo 745 have all been popular with the car manufacturer’s loyal buyer base.

And from the genes of such great estate cars come a new breed that will further cement the company to that top spot of the mentioned segment. The new Volvo V70 comes with so many improvements that it seems like the Ford Motor Company owned brand covered all the bases just like a Volvo car cover does when it jackets all the parts of the vehicle.

The company has 54 years of experience in the development and production of such vehicles and it shows in the ever improving luxury wagons that they produce. Their confidence in their mass produced estate car is summed up by Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp when he stated that, “This segment has been our specialty ever since we invented it back in the 1950’s. Our competitors can count on us remaining number one in the future too.” He is confident that they would still be on top of the market for a long time because of the Volvo V70 which he had described to give “rear passengers and luggage both ride in first class”.

Their continuing dedication to producing estate cars is due to the fact that the demand for such cars is increasing as their performance gets better and better. The primary reason for the increase in size of the estate car segment is the changing preference of many car buyers which opts for these large and versatile cars instead of the less roomy sedan. Switching to a luxury wagon from a sedan does not sacrifice the driving dynamics and the comfort of the occupants. The versatility of the estate car and its much roomy interior is its best advantage over the sedan. And today, the focus in choosing an estate car is design and comfort which the company strived to give to their Volvo V70. As a matter of fact, the car manufacturer even expects that half of the number of people that will buy their Volvo V70 will not be actually a person with a growing family.

What the new Volvo V70 brings to the table is a totally new design brought about by the use of the design team of a new vehicle architecture technique. For the first time in the model’s history it will sport a six-cylinder engine and it would also offer a wide array of engine choices. Consumers can choose from two gasoline engines – a diesel engine or a bio-ethanol powered engine. All these engines are engineered to perform to its highest potential with a complementing lineup of high performance parts. The new Volvo V70 has an improved front seat comfort over its predecessors, thanks to an improved cushioning of the seats and ergonomically designed instruments and console. The car also sports a high-end audio system for the user’s listening pleasure.

Versatility is what this estate car and it is evident in the 40/20/40 rear seat split configuration makes it the most versatile and flexible vehicle of its kind, add to that a convenient cargo loading feature. It features a sliding cargo floor that allows for convenient loading of luggage. A power liftgate is also an optional feature that further increases the convenience of the user in terms of loading cargoes. To ensure that the cargo should have a comfortable ride just like the vehicle’s passengers – every detail in the compartment and all the accessories included are designed to give the correct feeling of luxury and comfort.

What Exactly is a Cult Car?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

A Supreme Court Judge once made a statement to the effect that while he could not define porn, he knew it when he saw it. And the cult car shares this attribute. Forbes can designate the top ten cult cars of the time but what is a cult car? Why are these cars considered cult cars? Why are they the top ten cult cars? And why are some cars admitted to the Cult Car Club while others are overlooked?

Actually, there are many ingredients in the cult car recipe, which is probably why it is so hard to define. For some, the cult car evokes an emotional attachment so that it becomes a person in the eyes of its owner, not just a transport vehicle but also a family member.

This is similar to the chemistry in the male/female attraction. Boy sees girl, boy likes what he sees, boy has to date girl. Buyer sees car, the car cupid fires his arrow, buyer has to have car, this car, no other. And when enough buyers react to a car in this manner, you have a cult car. But the buyer can’t say exactly why anymore than couples can explain that initial attraction which, for lack of explanation, is dubbed chemistry in the personal ads.

Although the chemistry has to appear often enough for a car to achieve cult status, popularity is not the criterion. Sales determine popularity. A car can be a top seller because it is practical and low mileage but still never make it into the Cult Car Club.

But still people do try to define or perhaps defend their choices. Some say it is design – a design that is individualistic, eccentric or futuristic.

The suicide doors and menacing front bestowed cult status on the 1961 Lincoln Continental. The design supposedly altered the American public’s perception of luxury automobiles. And the curved glass side windows, an industry first, helped.

Although there are many luxury cars in the top ten, a car does not need to be a high priced luxury car to achieve cult status. Lesser-priced cars such as the Volkswagen and Austin Mini, although not in the top ten, have been admitted to the club. The Dodge Challenger, much more affordable than the Lincoln Continental or Ferrari Enzo, was Number 3 on the top ten list.

The charisma of the owners can play a part. The Jaguar D Type was a slick racing car, which captured first place in the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times during the 50′s decade. And while it was viewed as the sexiest racing car of its time, the fact that it was owned by such celebrities as Steve McQueen and Ralph Lauren contributed to its cult status.

Being in the right place at the right time is essential to many achievements in life – wealth, fame, and career success. It also helps cult cars. The VW van in the 60′s owes its place to its appearance in the popular culture of the time. This was the era of war protesters, the civil rights movement, and the Flower Children. The hippie culture embraced the VW van and elevated it to cult status. Had the van come along in the late 40′s or early 50′s it would probably been nothing more than a people mover attractive to soccer moms.

But like love perhaps the most romantic aspect of cult cars is the lack of definition. They’re sexy, they’re passionate, and they hit you in the gut. And like love, it’s an emotion to be enjoyed, not analyzed.

Reminiscing ‘porsche Pete’

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

He was known simply as “Porsche Pete”, a character created on a website intended for Porsche automobiles specifically the Boxster. The man behind it was Charles “Chuck” Hammersmith of Burlington.

In July 1, Hammersmith died at the age of 53. He pioneered the PPBB.com Web site, or Porsche Pete’s Boxster Board, one of the first Internet message boards on the subject, and the most active devoted to the Boxster, Porsche’s best-selling car. The website might also have an insight on Porsche 944 parts.

While Hammersmith had been charmed by Boxsters since before he could drive, friends from his message board say that the car particularly interested him because it was the first Porsche made available to a wider audience. Before his first Boxster, the fanatic owned three 911s.

Porsche fans organized the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit in Blowing Rock, where PPBB.com users have met for the last nine years. That’s because of Hammersmith’s site.

Karl Folkens, a South Carolina resident and PPBB.com administrator, said that the biggest thrill for many who attended the first and subsequent summits, was meeting “Porsche Pete” in person. He continued that one got the sense he’s a pistol-pulling kind of guy form the website, but in person one would find he’s very mild mannered.

Kim, Hammersmith’s daughter, said that her dad was never the spotlight dominant, and would have been surprised by all the appreciation he received since his death began to spread. Thousands of posts are on the Web site, highlighting Hammersmith through memories and photos.

Kim, who has an appreciation for Porsche herself and toured a factory while visiting Germany a few years ago, continued they didn’t realize how big an impact the site made for the past 10 years. The daughter added her dad never really wanted to take credit for anything he did.

Hammersmith wasn’t able to make it to the 9th annual gathering last month, where Boxster friends spent four days driving along the 400-mile Blue Ridge Parkway’s winding mountain roads.

Gordon Mckeehan, parts manager at Porsche dealer Suncoast Motorsports, said the honor was his and the other employees, to sell Hamersmith his last Boxster in 2003.

Cecil Thorpe, one of the site’s administrators said that since the opening of the website, Porsche owners and other self-designated “car geeks” have posted millions of messages on the message board.

Thorpe said the discussions on the board are monitored by Porsche’s corporate headquarters to learn what owners like and don’t like about the vehicle.

The loss was especially difficult for Robert Granger, Hammersmith’s co-host from Texas.

In an email, Granger implied that Chuck’s philosophy has always been really so special.

Aside from meeting Hammersmith at Boxster gatherings, Granger had met Hammersmith’s daughters, and was especially amazed by the father’s love for them. He said that other than a true Boxster fanatic, Chuck’s real pride and joy were his two girls, Kim and Sarah. He added Chuck never missed a chance to brag on them.
